WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

The Grand Designs Australia Magazine House of the Year Awards brought to you by Cosh Living and Rylock Windows & Doors have been AWARDED. Congratulations to all the WINNERS listed below.

Small Renovation – WON BY Placement Studio for Brunswick House

The judges said this work successfully creates a feeling of openness and light in a south-facing older home, while still creating intimate private spaces to retreat to. Material selection was restrained, robust, and dedicated to the feeling of warmth.

Large Renovation – We have two WINNERS – Studio Bright for Autumn House and Studio Johnston for SRG House

This extremely-hard-to-judge category featured outstanding south-facing heritage homes. The SRG house showed bravery and sophistication in creating multi-generational living around a central courtyard. The Autumn House by Studio Bright expanded on a Victorian entry to sensitively add light and living suitable for a young family.

Small New Home – WON BY Steffen Welsch Architects for Beach Slice

This home away from home allows for three parties to holiday together effortlessly, with communal spaces on one side and private on the other. Walls with internal storage and window seats curate views and provide spaces to engage or reflect.

Large New Home – WON BY Winter Architecture for Bermagui Beach House

Bermagui Beach House reimagines a family retreat on a prominent clifftop site with deep connection to the environment and embracing informal traditions of the Aussie beach house. The placement of volumes and the layers of landscaping define a series of outdoor spaces weaving around and through the pavilions, providing opportunities for sun and shelter.

Interiors Specialty Category – WON BY Rachcoff Vella Architecture for Silver Linings

The judges said the meticulously crafted and limited material palette provides for the view, furnishings, artwork and detailed joinery to shine, creating a cohesive, warm and robust interior for a very pragmatic and elegant family home. This new category was sponsored by Cosh Living.

Energy Efficiency Specialty Category – WON BY Alexander Symes Architect for Peppertree Passive House

Our judges said the Pepper Tree Passive House was excellent in all dimensions of energy efficiency, with thorough benchmarking throughout. This new category was sponsored by Rylock Windows & Doors.

People’s Choice Category – WON BY Alexander Symes Architect for Peppertree Passive House

Our judges said the Pepper Tree Passive House was excellent in all dimensions of energy efficiency, with thorough benchmarking throughout.

The standard has been incredibly high and is testimony to the talent that exists in the field of residential architecture.

We thank our Chief Judge Peter Maddison, who helped develop a robust program of considerations and recruited a panel of professionals to assist with the judging. Grand Designs Australia magazine would like to extend our thanks to both Peter and the judging panel: Rachael Nolan, Kennedy Nolan Architects; Chris Gilbert, Archier Architects; Interiors, Fiona Austin, Austin+Austin; and Madeline Sewall, Director of Houses, Breathe Architecture.

The Grand Designs Australia Magazine House of the Year Awards proudly puts the spotlight on residential architecture. We also take the shortlisted projects and showcase them to a community of prospective future clients who want to learn who is doing what in this arena. This year the Showcase Shortlist activation delivered more than 2.7 million touchpoints to that community and received 98,000 engagements. One of those prospective future clients was lucky enough to win a Solar Energy Storage System donated by GoodWe Australia.
