What Outdoor Design Source (ODS) Subscribers Are Up To in 26/27 & Beyond
Outdoor Design Source is the medium of record for anyone working in the field of public space landscape and external works.
This means our readership community is working on some of the major transport, park and garden projects in the country. The snapshot at the bottom of this document shows some of the interesting projects that our readers are working on right now.
Members of the ODS community are also actively pitching for projects funded by the National Active Transport Fund (recently expanded by $500M) and the Local Infrastructure Fund. The National Active Transport Fund is co-funded Federally and managed through state/local governments to roll out dedicated cycling paths, pedestrian bridges, green corridors, and urban amenity upgrades nationwide. The Local Infrastructure Fund ($2B Housing-Enabling Package) targets greenfield and urban infill sites. Because funding is tied to housing delivery, it directly unlocks local parks, street tree planting, stormwater/water-sensitive urban design wetlands, and public open spaces required to service new communities.
Major Current Projects
• Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East — VIC ($33B+). Massive station precinct redevelopments across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs (Cheltenham to Box Hill). Involves extensive public realm integration, bike/pedestrian interchanges, plazas, and local streetscape revamps around underground station entries. ODS subscribers involved are from Architectus, AJM consortium, Urbis, CPB, Acciona, Ghella and members of the SMEC-Arcadis Design JV.
• North East Link — VIC ($15.8B). Victoria’s largest road project includes the North East Trail — over 34 kilometres of new walking and cycling paths, extensive native revegetation, wetlands creation, and urban design treatments for noise walls, parklands and local interface zones. ODS subscribers on this project include professionals at Taylor Cullity Lethlean, the AJV Joint Venture, Spark, plus the contractors CPB, WeBuild andGS Engineering & Construction.
• Cross River Rail & Station Precincts — QLD ($5.4B+). Brisbane’s underground rail project features major surface-level transformations. Albert Street and Boggo Road stations, in particular, involve high-profile public plaza designs, pedestrianisation of key inner-city corridors, and streetscape integration. ODS subscribers on this project include professionals Archipelago Architects, Hassell and the Pulse Consortium.
• Sydney Metro City & Southwest / Western Sydney Extensions — NSW. Ongoing station precinct public domain works. The broader metro expansions heavily mandate urban design guidelines focussing on active transport connections, public plazas, and soft landscaping around transit-oriented developments. ODS subscribers on this project include professionals at Arcadia Landscape Architecture, Hassell and TCL. These transport corridors are physically built out by major civil contractors and consortia, including ODS subscribers from A W Edwards, the Parklife Metro Consortium, and the Metro Vista Consortium.
• Bruce Highway Upgrade Program — QLD ($1.5B+ combined). Connecting the Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast growth areas. Includes extensive fauna-sensitive design, major earthworks, revegetation, acoustic mounding treatments, and community-interface cycling tracks. ODS subscribers involved are from AECOM, SMEC and RPS Group, The Gateway Connect JV, John Holland and Acciona.
• Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport & Precinct — NSW. As the airport approaches its major operational phases, surrounding commercial and transport precinct landscaping, native planting schemes aligned with local Cumberland Plain woodland guidelines, and extensive civic forecourts are reaching primary execution phases. ODS subscribers involved are from 360 Degrees Landscape Architects, Woods Bagot, B&K Revegetation & Landscaping and the Aero West JV.
• Ngurra Cultural Precinct — ACT. This high-profile national cultural project in Canberra emphasises Indigenous landscape integration, native gardens, and public gathering places designed around storytelling and community interaction. ODS subscribers working on this project come from COLA studio and Hassell.
Members of the ODS community are currently involved with massive city-shaping transport projects that include significant public-domain packages, station precinct streetscaping, parks and gardens.
