Update 6th October 2022

Brand Building for Residential Architects

Part of our mission at Grand Designs Australia Magazine House of the Year is to develop business for the architecture profession as a whole, and the community of architects who enter the competition.  Residential architecture often does not get the spotlight it deserves – we proudly provide coverage to projects that we find interesting from the House of the Year community.

Coverage in Grand Designs Australia Magazine

Coverage in Grand Designs Australia Magazine and associated digital assets is part of our plan. Regardless of how a project performs in the competition there is a reasonable chance of getting some form of coverage either in the editions that occur in the run up to the awards announcement. Our Editorial team regularly check out new projects that arrive via the House of the Year program.

Tiers for Honors

All entrants are checked and become finalists once we have established that the entry is filled in correctly and imagery has been received.  These finalists are progressed to judging.

The judging panel then picks…

  • A number of Shortlisted entries who receive a certificate, and proportional coverage in the Shortlist Showcase
  • A Category Winner. The Winners receive the trophy and significant coverage in the Shortlist Showcase.

Together the Winners and the Shortlisted entrants become part of the “Shortlist Showcase” feature which is published both in the magazine and online.

Award Categories for 2022/23

The main categories for 2022/23 are:

  • Large New Build
  • Large Renovation
  • Small New Build
  • Small Renovation

The Judging Panel

The Panel will change from year to year and will include architecturally-trained professionals. In 2022/23 the panel will be:

  • Peter Maddison – Host Grand Designs Australia TV, Maddison Architects.
  • Rachael Nolan – Kennedy Nolan Architects
  • Chris Gilbert – Archier Architects
  • Fiona Austin – Austin+Austin
  • Madeline Sewall – Director of Houses, Breath Architecture

Specialty Categories

In addition to the above we have two sponsored Specialty Categories and a People’s Choice Prize.

Entrants who participated in the program could nominate their project for either of the specialty categories if relevant to the project – they were:

  • Energy Efficiency sponsored by Rylock Windows & Doors
  • Interior sponsored by Cosh Living

In addition to the above we invite members of the public to look at the “Shortlist Showcase” to learn about some of the best operators in the market, and vote on their favorite. This voting feature is designed to give some interactivity and engage the audience with the projects that they are seeing.  It also produces an additional People’s Choice Award.
